Mycelium Exhibition

APRIL / 2023
Project Type: Branding, Identity
Role: Lead Designer

Amongst a small group of fellow designers, I was a lead designer in developing the visual identity for the 2023 VCUarts Graphic Design department’s Senior Exhibition, titled “Mycelium”. Mycelium is the expansive and ever-growing underground network of fungi. This Senior exhibition (showcasing 69 student works) speaks to both the individualistic nodes and interconnected nature of our work. Though there is great range in medium and form, the core of our ideas organically intertwine—compounding, calling back to, and recontextualizing one another—to form this mycelic body of work.

To encapsulate this meaning behind the term Mycelium, I developed a system for the logo design, consisting of a bold serif font that is intertwined with loose, organic shapes. The organic shapes were derived from standard letterforms to create a unique rendering of the word “mycelium” that is full of movement while making unexpected connections. My creative team and I were responsible for developing this logo, as well as the brand guidelines for color and typography usage in other aspects of the exhibition to follow, such as social media marketing, print and digital promotional materials, and vinyl installations.

Additional creative teams comprised of other fellow VCUarts 2023 class mates of mine were dedicated to taking the logo and branding that I developed with my team and applying it to web and catalog designs formats to advertise and archive our collective work.
