“Be a Man” is a vulnerable fashion and design project that drew inspiration from the societal pressures of the ideal male body image and its expectations of what masculinity should be. To develop this piece I compiled research as well as personal writings regarding my own experience with masculinity and body image.
To fully emphasize the message of this project, I wanted to display the information on something that was connected to my body. A sweatshirt felt like the ideal answer, but something about just buying one to print on felt disconnected from the projects goal. To resolve that, I developed my own sweashirt pattern that was oversized and comfortable for my own body. After sewing together my personalized sweatshirt, I printed my research, writings, and graphics that I created onto the fabric. The material and content of this piece created an intriguing juxtaposition between an uncomfortable conversation to have and a comfortable clothing item to wear.
